Is OLAPLEX Safe? Explore our product testing results
We are proud that our product testing shows that OLAPLEX products are safe and effective. Our first priority is customer well-being, which is why we conduct human repeat insult patch tests (HRIPT), the standard human clinical test used for personal care and pharmaceutical products to test for irritation and sensitization, before our products are made publicly available. The results of these tests show no indication of a potential to elicit skin irritation or sensitization.
The Science of OLAPLEX
Our patented ingredient, Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate, is designed to repair the millions of disulfide bonds within hair that give it structure, strength, and stability. It gets to the root of all types of damage by rebuilding broken disulfide bonds in any hair type.

Facts on Hair Loss
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it’s normal to lose between 50 and 100 strands of hair every day.Hair shedding is part of a natural balance—some hairs fall out while others grow in. When the balance is interrupted, hair loss occurs.
There are a wide variety of reasons for hair breakage or hair loss, as medical and scientific experts have publicly stated. These include lifestyle, various medical conditions and medications, the aftereffects of COVID, skin conditions, and more, according to the Mayo Clinic and the American Academy of Dermatology.
Hair Health FAQs
Our mission is to ensure that every user of our products has healthier and stronger hair. OLAPLEX uses state-of-the-art testing to determine product safety and efficacy. OLAPLEX utilizes contract manufacturers that comply with cosmetic Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)—a system for ensuring that products are consistently produced and controlled according to set quality standards. OLAPLEX performs safety and efficacy testing before a product is brought to market.
We take pride in developing products that are scientifically proven to improve hair health, not harm it. Our products undergo safety and efficacy testing at independent laboratories. There is no evidence from that testing that OLAPLEX products or their ingredients cause hair loss or hair breakage.
It is normal to shed 50-100 hairs per day. For hair loss that exceeds that amount, there are many possible contributing factors including diet, stress, health concerns, pregnancy, and pharmaceutical use. If you are experiencing consistent hair loss, you should consult a dermatologist.

No. OLAPLEX was founded to revolutionize science-backed solutions for healthy, stronger hair. However, we understand that losing hair in any amount can be stressful, which is why we follow strict quality control processes, safety assessments and test our products before they go on the shelf to ensure that they are safe to use.
Experiencing hair loss or hair breakage may be a difficult experience, and we are sympathetic to anyone in that position. We remain confident in the evidence showing that OLAPLEX products are safe and effective. We recommend that anyone who is experiencing consistent hair loss or hair breakage consult with a dermatologist or other healthcare provider to more fully assess their individual situation.
Product Testing FAQs
Our third-party laboratory partners run a series of rigorous safety and technical tests on both skin and hair to ensure all OLAPLEX products are safe and effective.
For example, before our products are made publicly available, we conduct testing in line with industry best practices (e.g., a human repeat insult patch test [HRIPT]). Further clinical testing is done on hair itself to measure the response and effectiveness of our products to fortify hair and rebuild broken bonds at the molecular level.

Yes. OLAPLEX utilizes third-party owned and operated factories to manufacture our products, all of which comply with cosmetic Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Compliance with GMPs ensures that products are manufactured according to the highest standards for safety and quality control in the industry. As part of their compliance with GMP, our contracted factories must conduct industry-standard testing of their facilities prior to manufacturing every new batch of a product. This testing ensures that there are no environmental microcontaminants present during the manufacturing process, and our factories are required to retain the results of these tests for quality assurance.
We are proud that all of the human repeat insult patch tests (HRIPT) conducted show that OLAPLEX formulas are safe. The test results show no indication of a potential to elicit dermal irritation or sensitization, otherwise known as a contact allergy.
Usage FAQs
OLAPLEX begins repairing hair bonds upon first use! OLAPLEX’s patented ingredient, Bis- Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate, is designed to target the millions of disulfide bonds within our hair that give it structure and stability. These bonds can be damaged or broken in numerous ways, including heat from styling tools, color and chemical treatments, brushing, environmental factors, and the natural aging process. Users of OLAPLEX can protect their hair and expect visibly healthier, stronger, and more vibrant hair.
All OLAPLEX products are labeled with instructions for recommended use. It is not possible to “over bond” hair when using OLAPLEX products as instructed.
OLAPLEX products work to protect hair and relink existing bonds, not create new ones. As bonds constantly face damaging forces like heat from styling tools, color and chemical treatments, brushing, environmental factors, and the natural aging process, they need to be strengthened on a continuous basis. Everyone has broken hair bonds to some extent! Even if you have healthy hair, you will have some level of damage that OLAPLEX would be able to repair.

OLAPLEX offers professional-grade products for salon use for best results. OLAPLEX offers and encourages professional stylists to become certified in use of the OLAPLEX professional products. In order to be certified, a stylist must study a product knowledge training manual and pass a test.
OLAPLEX products work on extensions that are 100% human hair. The bonds in human hair used for extensions can be damaged just like the hair on our heads, and OLAPLEX’s products are scientifically formulated to penetrate and repair hair from the inside out by rebuilding broken bonds at the molecular level.
When treating extensions with any products, OLAPLEX or otherwise, we recommend testing the product on a few strands before using it on the full set of extensions. Companies can label extensions as being 100% human hair as long as they contain 80% human hair or more, which can prevent OLAPLEX from being fully effective

OLAPLEX takes the health and safety of our customers very seriously, and our products are formulated to be safe and effective when used as instructed. Although we cannot speak to the safety and effectiveness of non-OLAPLEX products, we recommend individuals consult their hair stylist for advice on creating a haircare regimen suitable for achieving their desired results, which may include products from different brands.
We recommend using LashBond and BrowBond within six months of opening. All other OLAPLEX products should be used within twelve months of opening.
OLAPLEX Ingredients FAQs
OLAPLEX products do not contain any plastics that coat the hair. OLAPLEX’s patented ingredient, Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate, is designed to target the millions of disulfide bonds within our hair that give it structure and stability. Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate is not a plastic, and it doesn’t coat your hair—it is scientifically formulated to fortify hair from the inside out by rebuilding broken bonds at the molecular level.
OLAPLEX products No.4 and No.6 contain minimal hydrolyzed vegetable protein, also known as peptides, at very low levels. Our other products do not contain any forms of protein. Peptides such as those in OLAPLEX’s No.4 and No.6 are chemically very different than standard proteins, and therefore do not weigh down hair.
Keratin, for example, is a naturally occurring protein in hair and makes up about 95% of hair mass. Haircare products use fragments of keratin to supplement damaged hair keratin and restore the hair’s strength and shine.

OLAPLEX does not currently manufacture or sell products containing lilial. In September 2020, the EU regulatory authority announced their intent to phase out butylphenyl methylpropional, commonly referred to as "lilial," by March of 2022. At OLAPLEX, lilial was previously used in small amounts as a fragrance in N°.3 Hair Perfector® and N°.2 Bond Perfector®. It is not an active or functional ingredient. While this phaseout is limited to the EU, out of an abundance of caution, OLAPLEX proactively removed lilial from our N°.3 Hair Perfector and N°.2 Bond Perfector globally.
While our products are designed with safety in mind, we recommend pregnant women consult with their healthcare provider prior to use to address any concerns or individual sensitivities.
